Yarraville Goods Yard – BookCrossing Proposal

The Maribyrnong Council has created a draft masterplan for the Yarraville Goods Yard, the area from Anderson St along the rail tracks to Bellairs under the Somerville Rd overpass. Council is requesting feedback by Friday 14 September.

The idea is for a pilot BookCrossing in the Railway plaza. It is a place where books can be swapped for free whether you are browsing on your way to or from the train station, shops or sitting in the area beside the cafes there. The book exchange is open to all people in all age ranges. The idea of the book exchange fits with Melbourne as the UNESCO City of Literature at a local level. BookCrossing can be a place for community gatherings and broader flexible literary activities such as storytime and school activities, book launches, book readings, a speakers corner or a meeting place for book clubs.

Amanda from Roam Architects has designed a pavilion which is striking and inviting as well as fitting the need to be structurally sound and weather tight to protect the books. A PDF of the design can be found below.

Councillor Martin Zakharov and Maribyrnong Council have been very receptive and supportive of the idea. We now need to show that there is community support for the idea. Please contact the City Design unit on 03 9688 0200 or cd@maribyrnong.vic.gov.au or the Maribrynong City Council website for further information or to provide feedback.

    Hi Martin and team,
I wanted to congratulate you all on a innovative and exciting idea, we have been linked into Book Crossing, but have not had much success in realising its potential locally, however I am passing on the link and hope that the extended concept of leaving books in many local locations may be part of this concept. In any event we will be delighted to contribute to and access the books which will I am sure flow through the doors and fly off the walls out of the beautiful little room

    Great location!
    Many Thanks
